Framing the Foundry

This is a striking watercolor painting (again by Marie Joy) that uses dynamic perspective to draw the viewer into an urban riverside scene. The foreground is dominated by the thick, diagonal white cables and railings of a modern pedestrian bridge, which act as a bold, geometric frame leading the eye directly to the central subject.

In the middle ground sits a beautifully detailed, deep-red brick building—likely a historic mill, factory, or warehouse—featuring arched windows, round portholes, and a tall, prominent chimney. It sits upon a textured stone or brick quay, casting a rich, fiery reflection into the dark, rippling water below. Behind it, more modern, grey glass buildings provide a striking contrast between old and new architecture.

The sky is heavily textured and dramatic, utilising loose, wet-on-wet watercolour washes to depict heavy, brooding grey and blue clouds pierced by brilliant, golden sunlight. The use of deep, cool blues and greys against the saturated red brick creates a moody, atmospheric, and highly evocative piece.
